Book Nerd Confessions

In case any of you were unaware of the following statement, I am here to remind you.

I am a nerd, and more specifically, a book nerd.

I have come to accept this over the past few years, and even become proud of it.  Mostly because I have found others around me that are book nerds as well.  There are several things that come along with being a book nerd.  For a long time I thought I was the only one that did these things until I found Epic Reads.  They make great videos that have brought so many of my book nerd problems to life.  Below are links to some of their videos that mirror my own problems.  I would encourage you to go watch all of them because, let’s face it, their hilarious, and so true.  The following are my confessions on being a book nerd.  They are in no particular order.

1. Buying a purse/Carrying too many books.  When I buy a purse it has to meet particular requirements.  The most important being that it has to be big enough to fit at least one book or, at the very least, my iPad (if I’m going to read an ebook, which is rare).

2. Weekends.  In addition to being a book nerd, I am also an introvert.  It is a terrible combination because I will make plans with friends for the weekend, but inevitably when that weekend rolls around, I will have the overwhelming urge to cancel my plans and stay in and read.  The video below is for books before boyfriends, but it’s the same idea.

3. Packing for a trip.  I know my sister suffers from this problem.  Packing is completely centered around the number of books you plan on reading and how many you can fit in your suitcase without going over the weight limit.  After that is figured out, then the issue of what clothes to bring with is decided.  My sister and I went to YALLFest in Charleston, SC back in November 2014, and, trust me, there was no small amount of anxiety over the books and number of suitcases we were going to bring.

4. Books and their movie counterparts. I much prefer to read the book before I see the movie, but if that is just not realistic, I have a terribly strong desire to read the book immediately after seeing the movie.  This urge really only applies to YA novels though, which is probably a good thing.  Like I stated in my last post, I used to hate the movie if it didn’t follow the book almost exactly, but as I have gotten older I have learned that the movie, logistically, can’t be exactly like the book.  Learning this has helped me to appreciate the books more.

5. Lending books out. This one is particularly difficult for me.  I only lend books out to certain people because I don’t want books coming back damaged, or not coming back at all.  That may make me seem mean, but if you are a book nerd, you know what I mean.

  1. Is it a problem that I sometimes neglect housework and schoolwork so that I can read? And for better or for worse, I’ve passed that problem on to my 8 year old. Good thing is that gift-giving holidays are super easy, bad thing is that it can get expensive in between!

    • I don’t see that as a problem. I do it all the time. Now, is it a confession? Definitely. Reading is so much more fun than cleaning anyway. And I totally get the part about it getting expensive in between holidays. There are I often times I will bypass buying new clothes or other things that I need in order to buy books. Some people would say that I don’t have my priorities straight. I, of, course, disagree.
