Upcoming Spring Releases

So I got a chance to read several excerpts from books that are being released this spring and I am super excited about a bunch of them.  Below are a few thoughts on each book, but I am hoping that full reviews will be coming on the books that I am more excited about.

**The Wrath and the Dawn – It left me wanting so much more.  I can’t wait to read the whole book!I love that I can tell how strong a character Shahrzad is going to be right off that bat.

The School for Unusual Girls – I was bored.  Just no.

Undertow – I’m still not sure how I feel about this book.  It sounds like it could be good, especially to work into school.  It seems to touch on several topics that are big in our society today.

Seriously Wicked – It was cute.  It definitely felt like it was written for a younger YA audience.

**99 Days – It definitely has a good start.  There is a bit if an air of mystery in it.  The reader is left wondering what happened between Molly, Patrick and Gabe.  It was hard for me to read the beginning of the bullying against Molly.  I might want to read more of this one because there might be something more to the development of making it an anti-girl shaming book.

Saint Anything – I wasn’t so sure about this one after reading the synopsis, but this one caught my attention about two pages in to the first chapter.  I’m really curious about the characters and how their relationships develop.

Ferals – I have no strong feelings either way on this one, but it was enjoyable.  I think it will definitely work for middle grades as well as some older YA readers.

**Painless – I’m looking forward to reading this whole book.  I’m really interested to learn more about the condition that the main character has and how that plays a role in the rest of the story.

**Magonia – If I were still a teenager, I would be friends with the protagonist, Azra.  She is sarcastic and witty.  She wants to know “all the things.”  The end of the excerpt, I think, was just the beginning of the meat of the story.  And, who doesn’t love a fantasy story?

Seed –  This excerpt is a little creepy.  A girl gets her period and her sister makes her sit trapped in an underground room for a day and a half, and tells her it is to make her fertile for a time when a man named Papa S. says that she is ready to be pregnant.  At that point, she will possibly become his companion.It sounds just a little too close to a polygamist compound situation for me.

Nightbird – An interesting story with a bit of mystery in regards to the main character and her family as well as the family that moves in next door.  Sounds especially good for middle grade readers.

**Another Day – This is David Levithan’s sequel to Every Day, which I haven’t read, but after reading this excerpt I want to read now.  I want to keep reading Another Day even if it is for the sole purpose of finding out if Rhiannon’s actual boyfriend is that much of an asshole.  This isn’t my only reason for wanting to read it, but it’s a pretty dang good one.

After the Red Rain – A post-apocalyptic world with mad magistrates, red rain, and a love story. . . could make for a fun read.

Nowhere but Here – This one has potential.  I’m really interested in reading the rest of it.  It sounds like a girl meets boy from the wrong side of the tracks type story.

The Haunting of Sunshine Girl – Paranormal YA = No for me.

Kissing in America – I might read the rest of this.  I can identify with the main character.  She is a strong teenage feminist role model, but at the same time is a hopeless romantic.  Yes, you can be both at the same time.

Tapper Twins Go to War – Good for middle grades.  I got bored with it two pages in, but there are drawings of things in the story and it is funny when the twins argue back and forth in the narrative of the story.

**When You Leave –  Super interested in this love story between a skater girl who is transplanted into a boarding school against her will and a preppy boarding school boy.

**Daughter of Deep Silence – I’m excited to read the whole thing.  It is the first good YA mystery novel that is geared toward YA readers and not middle grade readers.

Fuzzy Mud – It was a bit of a slow start to what could be a good book for middle grade readers.

The Keepers: The Box and the Dragonfly – Good middle grades read.  A little reminiscent of Harry Potter.

**Kissing Ted Callahan – A quirky story about high school romance.  Love it.

Goodbye Stranger – I enjoyed how the excerpt started, but then it kept jumping around and I got really confused.  If the book is like that, I don’t think I would like it very much.

**Biggie – I’m really excited to read the rest of this.  It sounds like it could be a great book for an anti-bullying campaign within a school.

**An Ember in the Ashes – I am SOOO EXCITED about this book!  It has been on my “to read” list since I first heard about it.  Sabaa Tahir writes beautifully, and I can’t wait to read through the full character development.

**Ask the Dark – It sounds like an interesting book.  I plan on reading the whole thing.  It has a funny and relateable male protagonist, so it would be a good read for boys.
